About Winchester, Kentucky

HISTORY

Winchester, Kentucky is the home of the Winchester Art Guild Inc. and Guild House Gallery. Winchester is located 20 miles east of Lexington, on the edge of the beautiful Bluegrass area of the state and is the gateway to the mountains of eastern Kentucky. Winchester was established in 1793 by John Baker and named in honor of Winchester, Virginia, his former home. The business district is one of the most intact 1880’s Main Streets in the state featuring many buildings from the 1880’s. It has one of the few elevated sidewalks in Kentucky giving that section the name “High on Main”. The Winchester Downtown Commercial District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The area is rich in history. Daniel Boone lived nearby at Fort Boonesborough along the Kentucky River that forms the southern border of Clark County. The nearby Lower Howards Creek area was a thriving industrial area by the 1820’s. In 1863 an earthen fortification was built above the river to protect the movement of troops during the Civil War and is now open to the public to visit. There are many miles of stone fences throughout the country side and the Winchester Cemetery tour takes you past monuments to our founding fathers. Visit the Winchester/Clark County Tourism Commission to learn more about the area.
