Phil May

Phil was born in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky near Prestonsburg, but moved to Central Kentucky with his family before graduation. After two years of Fine Art studies at Georgetown College with Robert Williams and Jim McCormick, he transferred to Morehead State University where he completed his undergraduate degree. He began teaching Art in Clark County in 1975 and at the same time attended the University of Kentucky graduate school to obtain his Masters in Art Education. Phil continued to teach art in the Clark County School System for the next 27 years.

After retiring, Phil began to focus on his art. In 2008 and 2009 he painted Winchester’s historic murals at the entrance of the Civil War Fort at Boonesboro. Consisting of 12 panels, the mural depicts historical scenes from life along the river in Clark County. Then in 2010 he participated in Lexington’s Horsemania, a public art project in conjunction with the Alltech FEI World Equestrain Games. He painting the horse Lexington. Today he continues to work on his art as the Artist in Residence at Clark Mansion, Hollyrood, in Winchester. He finds it a perfect place to paint and be inspired.
