Gene bought his first lathe in the late 80’s and began turning bowls, but struggled to learn the basics of
Wood turning on his own, he began studying under Rude Osolnick of Berea.
He prefers to use Kentucky’s native hardwoods and fruit woods and on occasion will use a more exotic wood from South America. He especially appreciates the grain patterns found in burls and crotches and likes to use box elder for the red streak often found in the heart of the tree. He makes what he calls natural edge bowls, one that retains the bark on the lip of the bowl. He gets many requests for “character bowls”, using the area of a tree that has received an injury, leaving holes, rough edges or twisted colorful grain.
